Extracting mud invasion information using borehole radar — A numerical study

چکیده
In hydrocarbon drilling, mud filtrate penetrates permeable formations and alters the pore fluid characteristics in immediate vicinity of borehole. Typically, prevailing situ fluids are displaced by invading filtrate, which leads to gradually changing distributions electrical properties. Understanding this invasion process is crucial for interpretation logging data associated reservoir evaluations. Conventional methods tend be inadequate purpose as their resolution too low. We find that depth can determined from borehole radar using an optimized antenna configuration time-lapse measurements. A series parametric sensitivity analyses provide information about effects variations rock properties on identification extraction signals reflected front. Our results suggest embedding antennas cavities filled with absorbing dielectric material, it possible minimize interference arising metal components tool. simulated scenario, a measurement mode time interval at least 6 h reliably extract front, proposed has lateral detection range 0.15 1 m. comprehensive indicates front principally influenced oil viscosity, porosity, formation water salinity, well molecular diffusion coefficient cementation exponent. These parameters should carefully explored assessed when applying evaluate environment.

Design of a slimline directional borehole radar antenna using FDTD
It is difficult to build directional antennas for borehole radar due to the limited space available in the borehole. Recently published results show, however, that it is possible to obtain directional information even from electrically small antennas. In this paper, we use Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) modelling to optimise the design of a four-element directional antenna array, so that ...
متن کاملThree-dimensional Borehole Radar Imaging
Before embarking on any mining operation, it is advantageous to locate the subsurface orebody in three-dimensions with a high resolution (~1m) ahead of actual mining, because this will increase productivity and efficiency. Borehole radar is such an emerging mapping tool in the mining industry, that can be used to image the subsurface orebody with high resolution. 3-D subsurface imaging using tw...
متن کاملDetection and Mapping of Fractures and Cavities using Borehole Radar
Borehole radar can be used in a single-hole reflection mode or in a cross-hole tomography mode. In the reflection mode, radar provides an image of discontinuities in the bedrock surrounding a borehole, including bedding planes, lithologic contacts, fractures, and cavities. The measurements are either directional or omnidirectional, depending upon the type of equipment and antennas. In the tomog...
متن کاملElectromagnetic logging technique based on borehole radar
An electromagnetic logging technique based on borehole radar is introduced in this paper. The tool consists of one transmitter and two receivers, which can be used to cancel the effect of the antenna characteristics by taking the ratio of two receiver signals. Since receiver signals measured in the time domain can be converted into the frequency domain by Fourier transformation, the amplitude r...
متن کاملImaging Tree Roots with Borehole Radar
Ground-penetrating radar has been used to detect and map tree roots using surface-based antennas in reflection mode. On amenable soils these methods can accurately detect lateral tree roots. In some tree species (e.g. Pinus taeda, Pinus palustris), vertically orientated tap roots directly beneath the tree, comprise most of the root mass. It is difficult if not impossible to vertically delineate...
